I used to play sepaktakraw at weeknights many years ago in Yishun. At that time, Yishun was still a sleepy estate. Even the coffee shop that currently operates near the sepaktakraw court was still unoccupied. That night, I finished playing sepaktakraw at about eleven plus and reached home at about 11.30 pm. I felt hungry….and without cleansing myself first, I searched for food in my kitchen. I had a good late supper….but what happened after that wasn’t good. It was scary in fact! While washing the plate at the basin just beside the kitchen window, I took a glance outside.

From my fifth level flat, all I could initially notice was a quiet night. But about 150 metres away, I saw a lady walking from the carpark towards the sepaktakraw court where my friends and I were playing the game earlier. Somehow, I could not help but notice the ‘smooth walk’ of the lady that I saw, from one lamp post to another. Her ‘smooth walk’ mesmerised me….since it seemed that she was gliding just above the ground.

She had fairly long hair….and she was wearing a white long dress. That’s when I came to realise that she could be an unnatural being. I put the plate that I was washing and took a look at the clock. It was just a minute after midnight. And you know what…it was a Thursday night…and what I saw could be a pontianak! That convinced me the belief by Malays that Thursday night is possibly a spooky night! One thing’s for sure, I stopped my takraw activities from then onwards.
