Indian Ghost Chilli – World’s Hottest
By: RSS/News Feeds

Very few Indian things are able to set a world record & fewer are able to enter the Guinness book of world records. But this time something related to ‘Ghost’ has been able to do this feat & enter the Guinness book of world records. Yes , its India’s ‘Bhut Jolokia chilli’ or ‘Ghost Chilli’ which has been confirmed as the world’s hottest pepper by the Guinness book of records.

Paul Bosland, a regents professor at New Mexico State University, recalls taking a bite of the chilli pepper and feeling like he was breathing fire.

The Bhut Jolokia is a naturally occurring hybrid native to the Assam region of northeastern India. A member of the university’s chille pepper institute who was visiting India sent Bhut Jolokia seeds back to New Mexico for testing in 2001. The plant does not produce fruit easily, so it took some years to get enough for field testing, Bosland said.

‘Bhut Jolokia chilli’ or ‘Ghost Chilli’ has been recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the hottest chilli on Earth. Interestingly a 17-month-old toddler in the eastern Indian state of Assam is addicted to the fiery Bhut Jolokia.

Jayanta Lahan’s parents say the child, who lives in Romal village in Dibrugarh district, 500km east of Assam’s main city Guwahati in India, happily munches his way through a handful of the chillies.

As per child’s father, Ritul Lahan “On Monday, he ate about 50 Bhut Jolakias in about three to four hours without showing any signs of tears or burning sensation in his stomach.”

Lahan said his son had eagerly devoured the chillies since he was eight months old.
